BRC is affiliated with the University of Mumbai to offer an MA by Research program in Philosophy under the Faculty of Arts.

About the Program

Students interested in pursuing an MA by Research in Philosophy can apply to BRC. The course focuses on independent research, where students explore a topic of their choice within the field of Philosophy and produce a thesis based on their research findings.

Duration of the Program

The program duration is a minimum of 2 years.

  • After being selected, students must submit their topic proposals within 6 months.
  • It will take 3 to 6 months for the University of Mumbai to review and approve the proposal.
  • Once the proposal is approved, the student can register through the University of Mumbai.
  • The entire process, from topic submission to registration, may take 6 months to 1 year. During this time, students can continue their research, which will be counted as part of the program duration.
  • After registration, a student can submit his/her thesis in 1 year.
     

Course Work

The MA by Research program does not require students to complete coursework. However, BRC encourages students to take certain core courses, such as Research Methodology, when offered by the institution.

  • For each course, there is typically 2-3 months of preparation time before the course begins, followed by 2 weeks of instruction, and 1 to 1.5 months for evaluation, totaling around 5 months per semester.
  • These courses are conducted in Govardhan Eco Village. If students are unable to attend in person, they are expected to participate online.

Research Proposal

  • Students are required to prepare a research proposal.
  • The proposal should follow the standard format required by the University of Mumbai. This format will be provided once the student approaches us.
  • The research topic must be within the field of Philosophy and aligned with research methods in the discipline of Philosophy. For this, students are required to review the Research Methodology and MA Philosophy syllabi, which can be downloaded from the following links:

Thesis Submission

  • Students can begin writing their thesis after submitting their research proposal. The University of Mumbai will review and approve or reject the proposal, which may take some time.
  • Once the proposal is approved and the student is registered with the University of Mumbai, the student can submit his/her thesis in a year’s time.

  • BRC offers the opportunity to receive guidance from international faculty who are experts in the field of Philosophy.
  • Some courses at BRC are taught by these international faculty members.
  • Upon completing the MA by Research, students who wish to pursue a PhD at BRC will be given priority by BRC.

 

Admission

Eligibility Criteria

  1. Candidates holding an undergraduate degree can apply directly to BRC.
  2. Students must prepare and submit a rough topic proposal based on the guidelines provided in the research proposal section.
  3. If a candidate's undergraduate degree is in a subject other than Philosophy, BRC will conduct a Faculty Change exam..

Currently foreign nationals are not admitted to BRC.

Fees

BRC charges a nominal fee to cover the necessary costs for processing student admissions into the University of Mumbai. These fees apply to the overall completion of the MA by Research program.

Dr. Londhe is an Associate Professor in Philosophy at S.K. Somaiya College in 1996. She is also currently holding a post of In charge principal, S.K. Somaiya College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Vidyavihar, Mumbai. She has completed her masters degree in Philosophy from University of Mumbai followed by a doctoral degree in the same discipline. She has published various books and articles in journals of both national and international repute. She is currently a life member of various institutes and has been a volunteer at different social institutions.

Dr. Thirumalai is currently an Adjunct professor in the department of Philosophy at J.J.T. University Rajasthan. He completed his Ph.D in the department of Philosophy at University of Mumbai in the year 2008. His dissertation topic was "The concept of Consciousness in Vedanta in the Light of Contemporary Developments in Consciousness Studies". He has published various books and articles.
